This was 3jack's picks for winner of the US Open. See - 3jack.blogspot.com/2011/06/3jack-updated-pga-tour-stat-rankings_14.htmlDavid Toms -Missed cut Nick Watney - Missed cut Steve Stricker - 19th Luke Donald -45th Hunter Mahan -Missed cut Rickie Fowler - Missed cut Martin Laird - Missed cut Jason Day -2nd Gary Woodland - 23rd Dustin Johnson - 23rd Other than Jason Day, his other picks were very way off the mark. I think that one cannot predict how well a PGA tour golfer will perform over a near-future 4-day period. For example, David Toms missed the cut - even though he had a run of two good performances in the past month. BM was happy to credit his golf instructional skills when David Toms won a recent tournament, even though there is no evidence that it was responsible for a steadily improved performance over the long term. One cannot even predict who will remain a top-10 performer over an extended time period. Dan C stated about 6 months ago that Matt Kuchar - who was a top-10 performer about 6 months ago - was very over-rated, and he predicted that he would fall off the radar screen. He is obviously wrong - because Matt Kuchar is hanging in there with many solid performances. Here is list of the US Open results. www.golfchannel.com/tours/usga/2011/us-open/?hj=xfsWhere are the S&T golfers? Jeff.

I find it amusing that in a thread about predictions you still manage to take a shot at B.M. By the way it wasn't B.M. tooting his own horn it was Mike and others. If D.T. didn't believe that B.M. was a help he wouldn't be using his services, so that's all that matters and you have no proof that B.M didn't help D.T.'s performance, you obviously have a vendetta against B.M. and it's painfully obvious, get over it.
Predictions are just that, predictions some pan out and many don't , but it's the fun of it ,that draws people to make them. I guess you don't understand that. Your just on this path of " I disagree " and" I will show you why so and so is wrong." It's old and boring and no one really cares.
Also if you were really smart you would have guessed( predicted) by now that Namj is J Man(n) who knew? ....LOL....LOL...LOL.

It is indeed a self-revelatory comment by "you know who". Jeff.

You call a congratulation from one friend to another in post #86 as B.M. taking credit for D.T.'s improved performance, that's a stretch even for you. Who is "you know who"? I just liked your name like your "The Mann". It's catchie don't you think?

I think there is a stock car level of parity among the 180 tour players that makes picking a winner impossible. I also think the last few years of majors have seen winners come from the middle of the ranks rather then the forerunners, much like you'll see week to week on the PGA tour.
That being said, I think there is level of excitement about Rory winning this week and he could distance himself from the pack and has the potential to exert a modicum of of dominance in the future.

I agree, very difficult to pick a major winner...particularly at a place other than the Masters becasue the course changes. That's part of how I make my picks...I not only look at my stats, but I look at past winners and try to figure out their 'stat profile.' At the Masters I did pretty well IIRC. I had Rory and he dominated the first 3 days.
With something like the US Open, I think the general idea is that ballstriking sorta rules the day. But, they could water down the course by US Open standards and that kinda throws thigns out the window.
Another thing is that it's difficult to predict what a golfer will do. Anthony Kim is last in my driving rankings....even worse than Mike Weir, which is saying something.
Other than that he ranks very well in the other categories. What if he happens to have a great week driving the ball and keeps the rest of his game the same? All of the sudden he goes from a guy I wouldn't consider to a contender.
At this year's Masters, Angel Cabrera lead the field in fairways hit. He's one of the most inaccurate drivers of the golf ball on Tour, usually ranking near last in fairways hit. And at the Masters he leads the field in fairways? And with his length off the tee....he's suddenly going to be in contention.
the other problem is that the European Tour doesn't really have the stats tha the PGA Tour has with the proximity to the cup and stuff like that. So come the Majors, it's even more of a guess. I picked Donald mainly because he just seems to play well everywhere. I didn't pick Rory because I wasn't sure if he was ready to bounce back from the Masters meltdown.
