I was watching the Farmer's Invitational this weekend and I noticed that Tiger was hitting his wedges very accurately. Then, there was a SwingVision replay of his wedge shot, and I noted that Tiger was using a combined "no-roll hand release action + CP-arm release action". I don't know for how long Tiger has been using this type of hand release action, but I previously studied his short iron shots a few years ago, and I noted that he was using a full-roll hand release action with no delay (in the same way that he uses that hand release action for his driver swing).
I do not have a swing video link of a wedge shot from this last weekend, but I did find a wedge shot video from September 2012.
Here are capture images.
Image 1 shows him at impact - note his FLW and bent right wrist.
Image 2 shows him at P7.1, note that he still has a FLW and clubface facing the target, and note that he still has a bent right wrist.
Image 3 shows him at P7.5. Note that he still has a FLW and near-intact LAFW, and his clubshaft has not bypassed his left arm very much. Note that his right wrist is still bent. Also, note how much he has rotated his torso counterclockwise and that he is using a CP-arm release action.
I think that this pattern of a combined "CP-arm release action + no-roll hand release action" is the optimum hand release action for accuracy because it results in the most stable clubface behaviour through the immediate impact zone (between P6.9-P7.1) and it avoids any flipping or rolling motion through impact. Ben Hogan is the prototypical golfer who used that hand release pattern, and it is about time that Tiger Woods started to routinely use that hand release pattern.
