Here is yet another reason why I have lost interest in participating in golf forums. See this Jeffy forum thread - jeffygolf.com/showthread.php?693-Mike-Bennett3jack defined the "overtaking rate" as follows: " Caddy view, the rate at which the clubhead moves past the hands thru impact and into the follow thru." I think that the overtaking rate through impact should always be zero, because I believe that any overtaking phenomenon would disrupt the intact LAFW through impact. Jeff.

'Should' doesn't mean that every golfer does it. There are plenty of golfers whose overtaking rate occurs before impact. That does not mean they are good ballstrikers. Nonetheless, I stand by my *definition* of overtaking rate.
I have no idea why you would lose interest in participating in golf forums and use me as an example with my definition of overtaking rate.

3jack,
I don't disagree with your definition. I simply think that we should not be evaluating a golfer's overtaking rate because that implies that any overtaking phenomenon through impact may be acceptable if it is less than "some" threshold value. I think that there shouldn't be any overtaking phenomenon through impact in a good golfer's swing action, and I therefore think that golfers shouldn't be discussing the issue of the overtaking rate in a golf forum.

I think you make the implication by yourself. We were discussing how certain S&T instructors favor pivot braking and they believe that will produce more power.
From my experience, many S&T people like pivot braking because it increases the overtaking rate *in the follow thru*. There are some S&T people I've met that feel that the overtaking rate will increase clubhead speed.
THAT is what I was explaining. Jeff just didn't know what overtaking rate meant (I thought he did that's why I didn't define it in my first post).
I don't agree with the notion that increasing overtaking rate will produce more speed. I think those particular S&T people are misinformed.
I think the overtaking rate can play a large role in attack angle and dynamic loft.
Now, I know that not everybody from S&T believes that 'overtaking rate = more clubhead speed.' But, I was explaining to Jeffy their logic behind those who believe pivot braking will help increase clubhead speed.
I think any topic with regards to swing mechanics should be open for evaluation on a golf swing forum. Just because it is not something that good ballstrikers do, doesn't mean we cannot learn from it.

3jack,
One may be able to learn "something" useful as a result of a golf forum discusion regarding factors that affect the "overtaking rate", but I believe that those factors should be routinely avoided (eg. pivot braking) because the goal should be to have a zero overtaking rate through impact. By contrast, BM wants to generate a certain (undefined) overtaking rate through impact in his hand release technique, but I have zero sympathy for any hand release technique that disrupts the intact LAFW through impact.

I'm not a fan of purposely pivot braking either. But I was trying to articulate upon what Jeffy was discussing with some of the S&T teachers were telling him. You then stated that the thread is an example of why you stopped participating in golf forums.
Then you stated that we shouldn't be discussing overtaking rate in a golf forum.
I don't understand those positions.
