Quite interesting results from a study of 200 million recorded shots. mygolfspy.com/study-accuracy-versus-distance/It almost seems that driving accuracy is not as important as distance and that there isn't that much difference in % of fairways hit between PGA pros and high handicap golfers. DG

Those results do not surprise me.
A longer driving distance gives a golfer an opportunity to use a shorter iron for his next shot and it is more likely that the golfer can hit that shorter iron shot more accurately (even from an off-fairway location).
I play episodically with some long-hitters and they are using an 8-iron for their second approach shot when I am using a fairway wood. Given the same skill level, it is easier to hit the short iron more accurately than a fairway wood from an on-fairway location. From an off-fairway location, a shorter iron shot is much easier to hit more accurately than trying to use a fairway wood.
Jeff.

That aspect you mentioned above does not surprise me too but then I thought about Drive-Holding hand release actions? Wouldn't you suspect that most high handicappers (ie.25) would not be D'Hers, yet they are more accurate than PGA pros with regards % fairway strikes (ie. 25 hcp is 50% while PGA Pros are 47%)?
Difficult to make a judgement unless there were a similar study of accuracy/distance showing the % of PGA pros which are D'Hers vs those that aren't.

DG It is much easier to land on the fairway if you only drive the ball 200 yards rather than 350 yards - for a given width of fairway. Secondly, the fairway width in PGA tour events is much narrower than that seen in the average golf course played by high handicap golfers. By the way, I know of no evidence that a pro golfer who uses a DH-hand release action will drive the ball more accurately than another pro golfer who uses a non-DH hand release action. Most missed-fairway driver shots in PGA tour golfers are due to pre-impact swing faults. Jeff.
